One theme that will be evident in this blog is that "content is king". Beyond a few observations about digital publishing and journalism in the college market, posts here will focus on over arching strategies and trends in digital media.

Routine Server Operations - Schedule Change
10/27/09 3:09 PM
CMN is rescheduling the the daily restarts on the server from 9:00pm – 9:30pm EST to 5:30pm – 6:00pm EST. Orignially, these restarts were instituted in the beta phase of the CP5 software to limit the amount of database requests and improve the speed and stability of the night-time publishing rush for all newspapers. During the summer, the CMN tech team made many steps and alterations to the load balancer, database structure, admin server and index server to make these restarts necessary. However, the daily restart of the admin server is still necessary due to several daily operations such as: - Deploy any maintenance code for bug fixes - Mapping of new domains of new schools launching on CP5 - Activate Google Analytics for new schools The statistics show that...New Hat for CP5 Sites
10/23/09 2:50 PM
One of the benefits of College Media Network for college newspapers is that there is a significant amount of digital marketing being performed on behalf of the individual newspaper by CMN. Our goal is to bring new readers to CMN sites everyday and raise the profile of college journalism and the response to news from the college perspective. A small piece of that process is the branding of the network of sites in the form of the hat at the top of the page. CMN revised and minimized the hat for newspapers that have migrated to CP5. We are updating the hat once again to account for new developments that should net our partner newspapers more readers and more traffic. While it is still in beta, news.collegemedianetwork.com, is a site designed to bring in more readership to college...New Registration Policy Change

The State of Maine has passed a new privacy law that takes effect on Sept. 12, 2009, prohibiting the collection of personal information from minors (under the age of 18), unless verifiable parental consent is obtained. Although a motion was filed in Maine which may delay the law from taking effect on the 12th, College Media Network and its parent company are taking steps to comply with this new law. This means there will soon be an age verification and “State of Maine” checkbox (allowing users to certify they are not a resident of the state of Maine) when users choose to subscribe to your e-mail newsletter or become users of your site. We want to keep you posted about this new law and the impact it will have on your website. For more indepth analysis of the legislation, read...Archive
