11/30/09 2:43 PMCMN is constantly looking for ways to help our partner publications increase traffic. The latest test to address this goal is an auto-populated “Related Stories” module for the article pages on CMN sites. Our data shows that nearly 90% of all visitors read only one story per visit. In order to retain visitors and encourage discovery of more content, new features that enable sticky behavior are required. CP5 already has a manual functionality for editors to select relevant content in a “Related Stories” box on the article page, but that goes largely unused. We know students' time is precious and sometimes taking the extra step to add related stories isn't in the cards at 2am when content is being uploaded – so that is why we are...
11/30/09 2:33 PMCollege Media Network is proud to support the many college media trade associations, including the CMA, ACP and CNBAM. Each year, CMN spends tens of thousands of dollars to support conferences and conventions across the United States, and 2010 will be no different. By the time February approaches our offices in New York and Boston, we are itching to get away. In late February, we will be attending the Associated Collegiate Press’ Spring National Convention in Phoenix, Ariz., where the weather should be a comfortable 80 degrees. Mid-March brings St. Patrick’s Day to New York City, as well as more than 1,700 college journalists for the annual CMA Spring National Convention. In 2009, College Media Network sponsored and hosted three different receptions for students...
11/30/09 2:21 PMThe mobile template is deployed and active on all sites using CP5 - and this is now a standard component of the publishing platform. If you wish to preview your mobile template from a desktop or laptop, you can do so by going to YourSiteName.com/mobile. This is the first iteration of the mobile template. With continued testing and user feedback we plan on making improvements in functionality and design in the upcoming weeks. There is no management required for newspaper staff on this new functionality – this template auto populates when CMN servers sense a mobile browser accessing the site. All mobile devices will be redirected to the mobile template of your site. (Optimal viewing requires smart phone mobile devices such as the iPhone, Blackberry or...
11/23/09 3:11 PMWith the beta launch of Collegemedianetwork.com, we are actively testing new tags and terms that may be relevant in searches. We are looking at Google Trends often and seeing what topics are searched and if newspapers are covering them – this match is something we can always use suggestions on. The way the site works if we set up a tag is that a newspaper must include the exact syntax of a string that we define. We hope to really blow this up come March Madness time, but in the meantime we are asking staffers to test the tagging mechanism. We just created a tag called “Year in Review” which indexes stories that look for the string “Year in Review 2009” (not case sensitive). If you write an article on this topic with those words in the headline...
11/23/09 1:33 PMCollege Media Network will take the CP5 Admin offline at 6:00am EST, Tuesday, November 24, 2009. The admin servers will be offline for approximately 3 hours for a code deployment. The CMN team appreciates the patience of online news staff at CMN partner publications. As per all code deployments, users will not be able to update their site, but the front end of sites will remain unaffected during this time. This code deployment will surface the infrastructure for a mobile template for all cp5 schools which we will configure for use during the Thanksgiving Break. We will provide instructions and detail on this functionality after the break. Also, staff will see some slight UI changes to the admin GUI as a result of this deployment. Please be advised. ...
