3/23/10 1:21 PMWe made a slight upgrade to the desktop of CP5. As you login, you are prompted with a bunch of information on your site such as traffic rankings, your most popular stories and comments up for approval. We inserted a couple of help and resource links into a widget that appears on the right side of the desktop (see image). This widget will give you direct links to the most useful articles on the training and best practices pages on this site as well as announcements on new developments, events coming up and ways you can improve your site. We realize that the turnover in staff sometimes prevents the passage of knowledge on workflow and tips so we are inserting this into the admin to make sure everyone on staff who logs in gets the 411. We are always looking for feedback, contact us...
3/17/10 12:30 PMIn the last couple months a few of our partners have made the transition to CP5 from CP4 and taken the opportunity to make significant upgrades in design. www.dailyorange.com The DO staff and especially Meredith Galente EIC of the Daily Orange are excited about launching the new site before the Big East Tournament and March Madness. With the new system they can customize special sections for their coverage much easier than before. www.villanovan.com The Villanovan staff puts a focus on content first and have made their best efforts to feature in-depth local news to the Villanova student body. They keep the operation simple and do all the little things right. The result? A good clean looking site. www.miamistudent.net Online Editor Scott Allison did a fantastic job...

3/17/10 10:28 AMAfter a stormy weekend that severely disrupted many attendees’ travel to New York, the College Media Advisers’ Spring National College Media Convention went off without a hitch. About a thousand student journalists came for intense sessions, critiques and roundtable discussions on college media at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Times Square. College Media Network was there in full force as well. We had a great time meeting our partners and prospective partners during the trade show on Sunday and Monday, giving away free T-shirts as well as promoting our NYC photography challenge, A Thousand Words. The winner, Edson Bueno from UMass Boston, was chosen at our Monday evening partner reception at our Times Square offices. The partner reception was a great time to meet student...
3/16/10 3:41 PMDuring the CMA spring convention, we ran a photo contest where the winner gets VIP tix to The Daily Show. The submissions were all great, high quality photos; the judging really came down to capturing the essence of NYC rather than measuring the quality and skill of the photography. We had a hard time narrowing down the selections, but ultimately a decision was made: The winner is Edson Bueno of Mass Media at University of Massachusetts Boston. Edson is headed over to The Daily Show with our staff and some guests in just a few minutes. We want to wish him congratulations and put his photo on display here. Congrats Edson! ...
3/10/10 1:38 PMSelection Sunday is March 13th and that means the NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament is right around the corner. We all know it as March Madness because the economy losses something like $1bil in productivity as men, women and children huddle around TV’s and computers to check scores and update their brackets. College newspapers have some of the best coverage in the country of these games and www.collegemedianetwork.com is the platform to aggregate this content. If you are unaware of this site, read this article. SO… Make sure you include the words “March Madness” (in that order) somewhere in your title or summary for any related content to the tournament. If your staff does this, your content will bubble up in that specific page. ...

3/3/10 11:49 AMCMN tech staff continue to work through our development queue of bug fixes and feature requests. Often seemingly small support issues uncover a much larger problem that needs addressing; one such instance was an Internet Explorer conflict with our native video player. In addressing this issue, we had to upgrade that component of the CMS and that upgrade resulted in our ability to make videos sharable. Users can now grab embed code of any video that your newspaper features on your site. The default is set to enable this function. The GUI in the admin now has a check box when uploading video that editors can check to block this sharing function. This must be done on a video by video basis. Another quick fix we enabled is a file name validation for...
