Email Subscriber: Password Reset

In the transition from CP4 to CP5, there are a great number of details to track – fortunately, CMN will take care of 90% of the work to make the switch.

When your paper makes the switch, CMN imports all the archives, comments, users and email subscribers from your CP4 instance, but the passwords for the users are not brought over.  Unfortunately, passwords are encrypted so that only the user can access the account.

As a work around, CMN assigns an individualized and randomized password and blasts that out to your user base.  This is a standard practice for many organizations.  However, CMN will not automatically send this email blast.  It is in our to-do list of steps to launch on CP5 and our staff will prompt you for permission to send.

[If your staff neglects to respond to our reminders, the email will go unsent and users will not be able to access the site unless they create a duplicate account – which is not a desirable result.]

This email serves two functions: it announces the re-launch of your site as well as provides instructions on how to reset the new temporary password.

CMN uses a standard template for these emails which can be found down below.  We composed the message to be very white label since it has to be used for so many different publications.  We welcome newspapers to edit the copy if they wish.

There are a few guidelines when editing the copy of the email:

-  Give more explanation (but not overly technical) as to why the email was sent.  Most people are not expecting to receive an email and may not be aware of the new website.

- End the message with more identifying information.  It is very common for phishers to sign a message in a non-personalized fashion and to provide no additional contact information.  (add the news office phone line and a contact email for questions)

- Be concise in your language because the ultimate goal of the email is for users to login to their account and reset the password – if there are flowery paragraphs on goals of the new site, users will tune out.
